Requires social media companies and AI model operators to provide consumers with portable copies of their data and implement transparent interoperability interfaces based on open protocols.
KCA Context
Platform lock-in (when it becomes impractical to leave harmful platforms) is not a neutral technology problem. Low-income users, communities of color, and other underrepresented groups are disproportionately reliant on platforms for community organizing and economic opportunity (e.g., minority-owned small businesses might use social media to reach new customers, which helps given the gap in access to traditional investors to help grow their businesses). The inability to move data to better alternatives compounds existing inequities.
